A street vendor in the Caspian coastal city of Bandar-e Anzali sells postcards of Iranian movie stars.

Just before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, a series of attacks left 182 theatres boarded up or destroyed. Film production came to a complete halt, and the import of foreign films was banned.

Today, Iran is host to a thriving film industry that has won critical acclaim in international circles. In 2000, Iranian films earned 118 international awards.
